My first view of any place I visit tends to be of the a) train station, b) airport or c) bus terminal. Amsterdam was no different in this respect, except that its train station was housed inside a ridiculously awesome building. We arrived in Amsterdam just as some workers were putting the finishing touches on the gigantic Christmas tree that stood out the front. Mel and I hopped on to a bus to head down to our hotel, as it was getting late. Naturally we hopped on to the wrong end of the bus so I (valiantly) tried to make my way up to the front with all of my bags. Upon seeing me (and hearing me apologise to a number of people) the bus driver called out and said "Don't worry about it, this one's on me". The kindness of strangers always astounds me. Amsterdam was already turning out to be pretty awesome.
