La Tour Eiffel

Ah, La Tour Eiffel. You fill many a young heart with joy at the thought of you. Me too apparently. I've never been one to think of Paris obsessively, a la Monte Carlo, but seeing the tower itself made a world of difference. My absolute favourite view of the tower is coming up in another post but one of the best moments in Paris was walking around the seventh arrodissement catching glimpses of the tower through the trees and buildings. It is hard not to revert back to that squealing, wish-upon-a-star feeling when you are presented with the above.

We got to the tower early, so as to avoid the queues. I think we ended up waiting around forty minutes or so but it was worth it to say that I have been to the top. Here is what I have to say about the top of La Tour Eiffel: IT IS FREEZING UP THERE. I was probably the coldest I was on the whole trip due to the icy winds present at the very tip. I had to keep taking my camera battery out and rubbing it between my hands in order to prevent it's dying! Totally worth it. I warmed back up pretty quickly though after running down the steps all the way to the bottom. The Nutella and banana crepe may have helped a little too.

Morning Light

If I had thought that Paris in the evening was stunning, then I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of Paris in the early morning. The light in this city is so magical. Mel and I made an early start that first morning in Paris, aiming to get to La Tour Eiffel before the crowds. We ate pastries from a patisserie around the corner from our hotel and walked to La Concorde, before catching the metro to the tower.

Everywhere around us the last colours of the Autumn season were struggling to hold on to their trees. One day, I'll return to Paris in the Springtime and experience the beauty of all the fresh new blooms in the jardins. Autumn though, has always held a special place in my heart. It is just so vibrant and full of colour. A last hurrah before the dullness that is Winter. Who wouldn't want to be in Paris to see it?

Lights in the Darkness

Walking home from my visit to Le Lourve, I caught my first glimpse of the famous twinkling of la Tour Eiffel. I only managed to see them sparkle through the gaps in buildings but it was enough to send my heart aflutter with excitement. This was when it really sunk in: I am in Paris. Such a strange thought to be having for a girl from the opposite end of the Earth.

Le Lourve

The Lourve. Prior to visiting, all I knew about it came from Madeline and reading about Leonardo da Vinci. As it was the first Sunday of the month, I got in free. The catch was that I ended up going so late that I was only able to see a few pieces of art (the line prior to this was absurdly long). It was nice seeing what I saw, but I wasn't exactly overly impressed by what is thought to be the worlds best art gallery. I preferred the Musée d'Orsay, which I visited later on in the week.

The building itself however is perhaps more impressive than the art it contains, but then I am no expert on art. I loved watching people wandering around, looking at different works of art in the long galleries. I couldn't help but wonder how many people had wandered through the galleries before me. Then, naturally, I created stories for these phantom ghosts who have long since left the building. I entertained myself quite well during the visit, though it is not high on my list to visit again.

Bonjour Paris!

Ah, Paris. You are so amazingly splendid, I would return to you in a heartbeat if I could. The above photograph was my first view of Paris, if you discount the Gare du Nord, the Chatelet metro stop and my hotel. The sun was just setting, turning the skies around la Tour Eiffel a delicious mixture of pastel orange, pink and purple. I wandered along the left bank of the Seine, browsing the little road-side stalls that linger there. I bought some interesting illustrations from the 1890s and saw a number of handsome seagulls. A perfect first walk in Paris, topped off with a visit to the Lourve (more soon) and the MOST DELICIOUS BURGER EVER. It was so delicious, I went back and had it again a few days later. So safe to say, my first impression of Paris was that it is pretty awesome.
