Le Cimetiere de Montmartre

It was only through following a walking trail in my guidebook that Melissa and I managed to stumble across this cemetery. Despite it being the resting place for the dead, it really was rather beautiful to wander the lane ways, crunching the Autumn leaves under our feet and watching cats jump from gravestone to gravestone. Some of which are obscenely large. Check out the photograph below the one of the yellow leaves (never getting over the colours I discovered in Paris) and see if you can spot Mel. Then you might have some idea of just how large the monuments were.

It was certainly an interesting experience, one I would actually recommend. Seeing how different countries treat and respect their dead is fascinating. Not to mention this walk was really rather beautiful.

"Can you picture how drop dead gorgeous this city is in the rain? Imagine this town in the '20s. Paris in the '20s, in the rain. The artists and writers!"

Montmartre was the first place in Paris where I could really imagine what living as an artist there must have been like in the 1920s. Unlike Gil, I am not able to travel back in time so alas I will never truly know what Paris was like in the time of Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Despite the many tourists browsing the rather poorly done (I can say that, I live with artists) work on display, Montmartre still had this other worldly charm to it. It felt like walking through a film set, where everything is rustically perfect. I mean, a white VW Beetle parked right around the corner from Sacre Coeur, come on.

Sacre Coeur

Sacre Coeur is actually blindingly white. Something I did not really expect. I also did not expect to be accosted by gypsies while there. As we were climbing up the stairs a group of men tried to "persuade" Mel and I to buy something or other by grabbing our arms. This resulted in Mel pulling out her bad-ass ninja moves (seriously, she knows Tae-Kwon-Do). Unfortunately though Mel's bracelet was broken and lost in the struggle! Rotten twits.

The cathedral itself is rather beautiful, as all churches seem to be in Europe (no brown brick 1970s churches there). The view was just as stunning, though my favourite part (La Tour Eiffel, don't judge) was missing to an intense haze that rested over everything. There was also a man playing La Vie En Rose on an accordion, touristy but charming all the same.

"Paris is a place where, for me, just walking down a street that I've never been down before is like going to a movie or something. Just wandering the city is entertainment."
