“This exists. It can be seen. It can be touched. These in pace, these dungeons, these iron hinges, these necklets, that lofty peep-hole on a level with the river's current, that box of stone closed with a lid of granite like a tomb, with this difference, that the dead man here was a living being, that soil which is but mud, that vault hole, those oozing walls, --what declaimers!” - Victor Hugo, "Les Misérables" Prague castle has had its share of the misfortunate over the years. It has a substantial dungeon to prove it. The dungeons housed weapons of medieval torture, long left unused, their spikes and sharp edges free from the blood that must have once covered the surfaces. The dungeons also provided us with the chance to shoot a crossbow! I was, predictably, terrible at it. My arrow did not even strike the surface of the target. Melissa's was met with cheers, and was thought to have hit the centre, but, alas, it bounced off and skittered away instead. It was lots of fun though, and is certainly an experience I would not have had back home!
