A visit to one of my favourite places: Sovereign Hill. I've been here numerous times before yet still the magic of the past lures me in. I'm unsure if it is the theatrical element of this place, or the idealised beauty of a time where ladies wore large skirts and bands played melodies in the street, but I love it here. We watch the lollies being made and sample the honeycomb they're still trying to perfect. I buy a pen nib to use with the ink my eccentric aunt got me for Christmas. We peek inside cottages and amble along country lanes. I eat a meat pie for lunch and purchase more of my favourite raspberry drops. Despite my joy at being here, I feel anxious and guilty. Conscious of Mum and her perhaps not wanting to be there. She reassures me it's not true, but my mind continues to play tricks on me even as we leave, as I thank her profusely for the trip. The charm of this place gets me though, and I leave with a smile on my face and a shiny new hat pin for my collection.
