HIMEJI CASTLE

The largest and most impressive castle in Japan. 

Himeji Castle was just a short train ride away from Melissa's place in Japan, and was well worth the visit. I explored the castle and surrounding area while Mel was at work (teaching English in local Japanese schools). Unlike Osaka Castle, which was transformed into a museum, Himeji Castle has the original features and provides a much more authentic experience. I explored all the areas of the castle, from the battlements to the ladies quarters. Each one held little surprises to discover. 

Whilst I was exploring the inside of the castle, it started snowing! The snow falling down through the open windows was a stunning sight. When I emerged from the castle ready to explore the extensive gardens, the sun started to shine! Weather doesn't get more perfect than that. 

I think my favourite part of Himeji Castle was just how authentic it felt, it did not feel like a gimmick. I could imagine people, real people, living here hundreds of years ago, and spent quite a lot of time wondering what that had been like. 

While it is out of the way for most tourists (I only visited because of it's proximity to Mel), I would definitely recommend a visit. It was my favourite castle that I saw in Japan by far.
